November Newsletter – Season of the Home

Can we go ahead and call November and December the season of the home? For what are the holidays without the gathering of family around a festive table, overnight guests tucked into stylish bedrooms, and the once-a-year desire to have a gift wrapping room? Apart from adding the traditional holiday decor, we love making the most of the season by reimagining our homes in a broader sense. Are we making the most of the furniture layout in the living room? What accessories do we love and want to highlight? What needs to be replaced? If you need any last minute accessories or tips let us know; our showroom is open and we are happy to help style your home! We hope everyone enjoys getting ready for the holidays and we like to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Featured BHD Space: Built-in Bars

A common thread throughout many of our remodels is the addition of a bar. Whether added to a bonus room, dining room, or just a dedicated area in the kitchen, bars are the perfect marriage of function and style.

The bonus room in this Brentwood home was begging for a feature wall and this custom built-in bar was just the thing. Beyond offering a refined service area, the bar becomes a design focal point for the space. Open shelves become display and the tile backsplash and textured wallpaper add dimension.

Need we mention the perfect opportunity bars give for seasonal styling? Here bright pink flowers brightened the space during our spring photo shoot. Just imagine how the bar looks now, all decked out for fall and the holidays!

Home renovation often comes down to making the most of your space. In this instance, you can see how me made the most of a small expanse of wall bringing the kitchen and dining area by creating a wet bar. Notice how the bar cabinets differ from the kitchen cabinets in color and design yet the backsplash is the same? This is a trick we used to define the bar but keep the space cohesive. There is no doubt where the drinks will be served!

Hot Topic: Landscape architect and artist Roberto Burle Marx

We love finding new designers that inspire us. This past month Elle Decor mentioned the work of Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx and we were intrigued. After a bit of digging, we found that beyond being one of the leading modernist landscape architects of his time, Marx (1909 -1994) would be known today as a sustainable designer. He used principles of biophilic design and ecology to guide his creations, installing site specific, low-impact projects. Marx understood how to use the built environment to help foster a relationship with nature, as biophilic design is about recognizing humanity’s place in nature and using the built environment to maintain, restore, and enhance our physiological and psychological connections to the natural world.

The Feeling is Natural!

Time is never wasted when spent in nature.  Today’s concept board is woodsy, earthy and grounded.  The mix of wood and metal tones with neutral upholstery is held together with an Indian wool rug; its faded blue reminds us of calm skies.

Passionate for Design!

We get asked this question everyday, “But what is it that you do?”  Interior Design is an often misinterpreted occupation.  Interior Design is the artistic science of creating functional, safe, aesthetically pleasing environments based on a client’s needs.  Designers have to apply technical and resourceful solutions that adhere to code, as well as solutions that coordinate and respond to the building’s structure.  What does that mean?  We can move walls!

This is a client’s existing home layout:

And this will be their new home layout!

BHD does a ton of kitchen renovations!

When we plan a new kitchen layout, we coordinate each and every cabinet with the client and know their needs for each area of their kitchen.

We then implement our knowledge of materials and products that will be used to create and furnish the space.  We take into account color, texture, lighting,  and combine them to finish off the space!

Designers also help clients find creative solutions to common problems.  Such as a need for more storage in a bathroom!

The result can be beautiful!

When coordinating a bathroom renovation we work with plumbing and tile, not only to meet the client’s style, but in order for the fixtures and accessories to function perfectly for their body type and daily routines.  We plan this very carefully.

We also have the gift of communication.  We not only have to communicate clearly and effectively to our clients, but with contractors and service providers as well.  The outcome of great communication can be gorgeous!

And…we also decorate!  Taking into account a client’s need for certain furnishings and functions, as well as style, we select everything from furniture to art work.  Pulling it all together is what we do best!

Hope we’ve helped shed some light into our world.  Now let us shine some light in yours!
