Beware the Ides of design! This month we will try to get to the bottom of some of the biggest blunders, misconceptions, and hang-ups surrounding interior design. March is a great month to set-in-motion projects and to consider what you want to accomplish around your house. Hopefully, with our tips, tricks, and techniques, we can help guide you on a beautiful and inspired course!

Featured BHD Space: Before & Afters

Photos are powerful tools to reinforce what a difference good design can make! Here are some before & afters from this past year that highlight many Ides of design!

Beware the boring entry way! Create a vibe from the get go! So often we see plain-jane entry spaces that are begging for a makeover. In this instance, we transformed the dark corner counter into a high-functioning, bright and cheerie space that is a perfect welcome into this downtown highrise. We added character to the walls with elongated wainscotting and designed a lush upholstered bench seat. The result is a crisp, smart, well appointed entryway. Don’t let anyone tell you there isn’t enough space to make an impact!

Beware of hang-ups! Who is to say what was once an outdoor porch can’t be transformed into an interior space? Sometimes it takes big picture, design thinking to scheme big changes. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and allow yourself to think of wild and crazy ideas! In this instance, the client renovated this property before they moved in and knew they would never use covered porch but would love added square footage. The solution was simple after the problem was identified.

Beware the trappings of an existing floor plan! Don’t settle for a layout that doesn’t suit your needs! In this example, we have a demo plan for an existing kitchen paired with the new floor plan. See how the existing space was choppy due to the cabinetry / island floating in the middle of the space?  By simply removing the cabinets we were able to really open up the space tremendously. Even with the furniture shown on the new floor plan, the floor plan seems more spacious and inviting.

Beware the fear of designing from a blank slate! We understand it can be daunting and we are here to help. In this instance, we took what was literally an empty, white room and transformed it by adding layer after layer of visual interest, texture, and pattern. Don’t be afraid of to make big changes to the space! Start by envisioning how you want the space to look and feel. Add custom built-ins (if you need them), invest in art you love, choose furniture that speaks to you, and you will be amazed by the results!

Hot Topic: Inside Fashion Designer Jeremy Scott’s LA Home

We have to say Vogue’s feature on Jeremy Scott’s Hollywood Hills Mid Century Modern home last month was exceptional. Not only is the property one of the best examples of California modern architecture by John Lautner, it is a perfect example of the relationship between personal style and architecture / interior design. We love how Scott says the architecture epitomized the idea of CA living and sort of why he wanted to live in Southern CA in the first place. It wasn’t the beach or the palm trees, it was the Frank Sinatra era, Hollywood glamour that captured Scott’s imagination. It is the same for us as well. Read the full article here and see more images from the home!
