Cabinetry. The very thought of it brings a peaceful satisfaction to my kitchen-loving soul… A permanently installed element in the kitchen that is meant to solely provide storage and organization. Perfection in simplicity and purpose. What a beautiful thing?!

The most recognizable element of kitchen cabinets are the doors. They set the groundwork for the rest of the space’s design. Let’s take a moment to consider shaker style cabinets. A simple face with a raised, straight edge around the perimeter. The shaker design is suitable for nearly all kinds of hardware, tile, and other decorative elements in kitchens and bathrooms. Previous blog posts have described the shaker as “universal”. Aptly put. Whether a kitchen leans traditional, modern, vintage or contemporary, shaker faced cabinets establish a canvas that can speak to each of these design aesthetics.

On another note, flat front cabinets are sleek and clean. Interior designers are implementing this minimalist notion more and more in contemporary designs. Flat front cabinets are also beautiful in the absence of hardware and with the purity of a high gloss finish. No glazing here.  For many of today’s homeowners, the streamlined design offers a welcome calm via minimalism.

The earlier mention of “glazing” makes me think of more traditional cabinetry which often has beautiful dimension. Here the cabinet door design has a raised panel and a more detailed profile along the trim. This is beautifully shown with a touch of glaze applied by hand for and artisan and organic character. “Distressed” doors also are used in traditional kitchens and bathrooms, though here a more cottage-like appearance is what clients are after.

Another favorite from traditional homeowners involves a different glazing altogether. Glass front cabinet doors. Here “seeded” glass has a beautifully vintage, slightly skewed charm. The aged and less uniform element is perfect in its imperfection. In contrast, a pristine, clear glass accomplishes the modern aesthetic we discussed earlier!

There is so much more to say about cabinetry and how it affects kitchen design as a whole… Custom elements to hold cutting boards and cookie sheets, deep drawers for heavy pots and pans, open shelves for cookbooks and coffee mugs. The list goes on and on, but that is another blog post for another time!
