Simple design touches can often make a dramatic difference in space, but in some cases, a coat of paint just can’t hide dated elements, and new countertops can’t instantly cure the case of a choppy layout. Sometimes your home calls for a total redesign.

Case in point: a 1990s Nashville home in need of a complete transformation. One of our lead designers, Stefani Benson recently worked her magic in an outdated home by introducing an updated design in the kitchen, dining room, living area, and master bathroom. Stefani added storage during the master bathroom and kitchen renovation, and a kitchen island replaced an awkward kitchen peninsula. “The homeowners enjoy spending time at home with their family, and they needed a functional and comfortable space to do so,” Stefani explains. “The goal was to remove dated elements and make the home more livable.”

The right layout makes all the difference — a fact worth repeating.

Functional spaces start with a smart floor plan. These before and after drawings done by the Beth Haley team illustrate the big changes to the kitchen.

BEFORE

The original design was outdated and in dire need of a new look. A full kitchen and bathroom remodel, plus thoughtful interior design choices in the living room and dining room elevated the look and liveability of the home. Architecturally, the layout of the kitchen was altered to allow more flow and function within the space.

In terms of the overall design, the talents of the designer and the tastes of the homeowners shine through.

AFTER

The Kitchen

Before and After: A Kitchen Renovation Results in an Updated Design
Swapping a dated peninsula for a central island was one of the most significant changes made during the kitchen renovation. The island now includes a seating area for the busy, growing family.
A kitchen renovation you won't believe
A stylish rug modernizes the home’s original wood floors while adding warmth and complementing the colors of the painted cabinetry. The herringbone back splash adds another pattern to the room without competing with the cabinet color.
Before and After: A Kitchen Renovation
Sleek white countertops and an oversized white sink keep things fresh and modern. With attention to the details, Stefani delivered a picture-perfect design.

Once dark and cramped, the kitchen received a much-needed modern makeover. “The muted blue on the cabinets play as a neutral and introduce a nice alternative to an all-white kitchen,” Stefani says. The current kitchen, with its thoughtful layout and stylish design, is the most-used space in the house.

The Dining Room

A dining space fit for any occasion
The layout of the dining room didn’t change, but the updated design makes it feel like a whole new room.

A dedicated dining area with sophisticated design proves it possible to combine function and style in a singular space. In the home’s formal dining room, a coat of paint and new decor went a long way in refreshing this space.

The Living Room

Before and After: 5 Rooms Receive a Modern Makeover
The original entryway into the living room consisted of ornate columns, giving the room a dated 90s feel, while the new space feels fresh and has a modern tone. Texture is also added with the coffee table, the designer’s favorite element in the space. It boasts a white painted, seagrass top finished in resin (for durability) and paired with a metal base.

The design team updated the layout of the living room by simply moving furniture, but the fireplace remains as a focal point. Ornate columns were removed, walk-ways were enclosed, and recessed wood shelving was added to bring texture to the design. The room is punctuated by rich, soft colors in oranges, rusts, and blues, all working together to achieve the soothing atmosphere desired by the homeowners.

The Master Bathroom

You must see this bathroom remodel
Removing an awkward vanity made way for this design, which prioritizes storage. Above all, the homeowners needed a space that functioned properly for their family.

The 90s columns were removed and the tub was replaced giving the space the feeling of a spa. There is something undeniably elegant about a freestanding tub. Don’t you agree?
A bathroom remodel that prioritizes function
The materials work together to create a sophisticated style and a calming space. By comparison, the original design was dark and dated. The new design is, without a doubt, flawless.

A sanctuary complete with walk-in shower, dual vanities and a soaking tub, the master bathroom renovation wows. Look to the floor for insight into a designer’s mind: the herringbone pattern in the kitchen is repeated on the bathroom floor in a dark floor tile. That is only the beginning of small details that make a big impact.

An appreciation for livability is reflected in the final design. Before the bathroom and kitchen renovation and updated design in the living and dining rooms, the home left something to be desired. Now, the practical and presentable spaces are something that Beth Haley Design and the homeowners are both really proud of.
