Designing your home can be harder than it seems! Between choosing the right furniture pieces, the perfect paint colors, the best decor, the ideal lighting – and let’s not forget nailing the proportions – there are a lot of mistakes to be made. Here are some common interior design mistakes that can be easily fixed. Making these changes will give your space an instant boost.

Interior Design Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Mistake #1: Choosing the wrong lighting

Lighting is one of the most important parts of a space, and harsh/poor lighting can ruin the look of a home. Make sure you have a light beside sofas and reading chairs. Three lighting sources for each room is a good rule of thumb. Another tip is to switch out your bulbs to dimmable LEDs so you can adjust your lighting for different periods of the day.

Mistake #2: Not measuring the space before adding furniture

Consider the proportions and size of a room before adding various furniture pieces. Taking measurements of a room is imperative before you buy anything. You don’t want bulky furniture sets or an oversized chair with a tiny piece of art hanging above it. Have a designer draw a mock-up of your space, and plan everything out beforehand

A room like this should never allow the eye to settle in one place. Plan your layout beforehand!

Mistake #3: Being afraid of color

Pops of color always brighten things up and make a space look vibrant.  A well-considered and tasteful use of color – even if it’s just a focal wall or on the ceiling, is a great way to show personality. One tip is to never let two bold colors touch.

Mistake #4: Improperly hung art

Most people hang their artwork or picture frames way too high, an issue you won’t really notice until you fix it. If you’re mounting a piece above a sofa or console table, leave four to six inches of space between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the artwork.

Mistake #5: Lack of personal touches and decor

Make your space stand out. Add books, art, or accessories that reflect you as a homeowner.  If you love the beach, add beautiful coffee table books to remind you of your favorite seaside location.  If nature soothes your sole, incorporate some potted plants in your home.  Or consider adding some framed photos of your favorite vacation, if you are fond of traveling.
