It has been our pleasure to feature artist Yuri Figueroa in our showroom this fall. We love how the paintings look in our space and we are thrilled his art has made it into so many of our client’s homes. Allow us to share his story.

Having grown up on the western coast of Mexico, Yuri came to Nashville 4 years ago to work on a documentary film shortly after finishing school. The documentary is on none other than Manuel; the living local legend who has been designing couture for the stars since Elvis was king. It is not surprising that a charismatic character such as Manuel would attract a kindred spirit such as Yuri. The documentary is still a work in progress and we can’t wait to see it!

Beyond the story of what brought Yuri to Nashville is the story of what has kept Yuri in Nashville. Nashville feels like home to Yuri and has a great atmosphere that has been a sweet spot for him to produce work. Whether it was the mix of Nashville’s vibrant yet low-key, city but small town feel, it has been enough to entice another wanderlust to stay.

Yuri is by and large a self-taught painter. Throughout his studies in film school he continued to work and paint, focusing on exploring mixed-media arts, different styles and techniques. You can see the breadth of his methods and interests from his pieces in our showroom. He creates sculptures, oils, acrylics, ink, abstracts, line drawings, and just about anything in between. We wouldn’t be surprised if his creativity took him deeper into uncharted territory and some day he invents a new way of creating mixed media art. Click here for a great piece written on him last year for Nashville Arts Magazine.

Part of what attracts us to Yuri’s work is the use of color. We love his combinations and the movement of color through the canvas. We also find the texture of his painting very unique and pleasing. There is clear dimension on each painting, which is something we always look for when choosing art. When you can see crests, ridges, and valleys, it makes the painting so much more dynamic, as subtle variations are exposed from different angles.

We are really impressed with the way Yuri’s paintings complement interior design. From the series we are showing in the showroom to the pieces that are available on his website, we feel like there is something in his work that stands out, makes a statement, yet doesn’t dominate a space. Perhaps it is Yuri’s subdued yet widely magnetic personality, transmuted to canvas, that is slightly protected yet pulls you in.

In addition, be sure to check out Yuri’s sculptures in Nashville’s downtown public library! His work is part of the show Estamos Aquí: 500 Years of Latino American History. Estamos Aqui is a series of projects and events focused on exploring the culture and history of Latino Americans in Nashville and the United States. Nashville Public Library, in partnership with local community organizations, will host film discussions, art exhibits, oral history projects, and other programs throughout the next year.
