Last month we declared November and December season of the home. With November behind us, we think it is safe to say December is really the month that says home. To us, December is as much about decorating for the holidays as it is making yourself a cozy nest to ride out the winter months. We all want our homes to sparkle and shine but the foundation has to be peace, comfort, and joy. As we come to a close on 2015 we are very thankful for all the clients we have had the pleasure of working with this year and for all our vendors and community partners, new and old. Wishing you all wonderful holidays and happy New Year! We look forward to designing with you in 2016!
Featured BHD Space: Headboards Galore
Even in a busy month like December you still need to sleep! We thought it was the perfect time to reflect on some killer headboards we have worked on over the past year; beds worthy of dreaming about all year long and certain to be greatly appreciated in December!
This custom headboard has everything going for it. We wanted to create a focal point on the wall and chose to exaggerate the height of the headboard beyond what was needed for function. The scale commands attention while the expertly tufted velvet is so lush and tactile. The built-in sconces are a refreshing dose of minimalism and help streamline the overall look of the room, creating a larger sense of space.
This headboard is all about working with the space and not defining it. We played heavily with scale in this instance, opting for a massive floral wallpaper pattern and a small, dare we say cute, bedside table. The dark grey headboard anchors the space while the scale of piece balances the room. The nail trim adds a subtle but defining geometric layer and helps the headboard standup to the strong wallpaper print.
Many times, you wouldn’t want to place a bed in front of any window, not to mention a floor to ceiling window. However, we wanted to create a great flow in this master bedroom and to do so, we needed to place the bed on the window wall. Selecting the right headboard was imperative to make this room work. We were thrilled to find this luxurious tufted headboard that scoops to serve as a cocoon. Even the small recessed back with side panels give this bed a very cozy, private, safe feel. Design well done.

Hot Topic: Color(s) of the Year!
Every year, major design companies declare a “Color of the Year” and the industry takes note. Yesterday, Pantone announced TWO colors of the year, Rose Quartz and Serenity. And to think we thought white was an unconventional choice, but more on that in a moment. Pantone said in their press statement the color of the year is really the marriage between the two colors. The decision to name two colors was also in part a statement of current times, a symbolic representation of the fluidity we see in society in terms of gender equality; nothing is black and white anymore. The colors alone, pastel pink and baby blue, scream nursery colors with clear gender undertones. Maybe this is the point Pantone was trying to make in this duplicitous selection, to move beyond gender stereotypes and to see colors for what they purely are. We can’t wait to see how the colors of the year influence fashion, design and architecture this year. Stay tuned!
White might not have been the most obvious choice for Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams to name “color” of the year but it was a very sophisticated choice none the less. When the colors were announced, a lot of people thought of white walls as a default, or not designed. To designers, however, everything we do is intentional and if we choose white, it is for a reason. White is the ultimate backdrop and the most basic building block in a room that lets individual elements shine. If you’ve ever visited our office, you know our color library contains at least 500 different shades of white. Each offers a subtle nuance of undertones, whether it be warm or cool, muted or electric. Trust us, the perfect white for your project isn’t as simple as ordering a bucket of ‘white’ paint!
