We love design magazines as much as anyone else but we have to say we sort of giggle every year when we see “Fall Trends” presented as anything other than the tried and true design techniques employed every season when the weather turns cold. Not to say fall decorating is a cliche, but their ways to cozy up a home after a long summer are pretty much the same as previous years. This year, we’ve gone through our archive for photos that will hopefully inspire a little creativity and serve as a reminder of the luxuries to be had at home as we transition into the holiday season. With that in mind, the one design “trend” we’ve seen this year that we absolutely love is pumpkin planters. Have you ever heard of such a thing? We recommend trying them out this weekend as a fun DIY! Happy Halloween everyone!
Featured BHD Spaces: Fall Styling
With the warm days dwindling away, there is no better time to focus on fall styling. Clean surfaces, choice accessories, and a few hints of autumn. This year, sumptuous textiles, glistening accents, and woven knits
The image above shows a paired-down mudroom, perfect for busy school days. Not only is it well organized, it is also inviting to visitors. We love the elegant accents like beadboard, pale colored cabinets, and stained wood surfaces. The look is subtle and sophisticated– even when filled with kids clothes!
The rustic charm of the salvaged wood accent wall paired with the glistening hardware make for an unexpected powder room. Sometimes, simplicity is the finest form of design.
Does anyone remember this pairing from the showroom from a few years back? The funny thing about having a showroom is you fill the space with items you love and eventually say bye as you pass them along to a clients home. We tend to miss almost everything that passes through the doors but these benches, oblong tray, and artwork by Jennifer Pepper stands out out to as a moment of showroom glory! To recreate this look, find items in your home that belong to the same autumn color family and group them together. Don’t worry about being too matchy matchy though, if you only have one or two accessories, tie in a second or third complementary color.
With the classic brick-like, autumnal backsplash, this photo screams fall. Though the kitchen is modern with white cabinets and stainless steel, it is anything from cold thanks to the antique bronze pendants, reclaimed hardwood floors, and the cozy woven roman shade. The bowl of oranges is the perfect pop of color and is one of the easiest, and yummiest, ways to bring a pop of fall color into your home.
Last but not least, we have this lovely corner, styled to a T. Ceramics in an array of beautiful complimentary shades of white, grey, and black compliment the luxurious cream carpet and the jaw dropping sideboard. The look is restrained, modern, and elegant.

Hot Topic: Color Forecasting
Every year, designers have a lot of fun seeing companies unveil their color predictions for the upcoming year. This year, we are delighted by the selections presented by Sherwin Williams and are excited by their themes of Sincerity, Unity, and Connectivity. Each collection encapsulates a great color story and provides a look at color trends for 2018 and beyond. Below are the looks. In addition, Sherwin Williams named Oceanside, one of our favorites, as their color of the year. Though Oceanside isn’t a quintessential fall color, it does pair nicely with Autumn tones and helps set the stage for projects coming ahead. 2018 is looking good already!
