10 Tiled Spaces You’ll Love

When renovating a kitchen or bathroom, it’s likely you’ll incorporate tiles as a key design element — or at least you should. Tiles add texture and personality, elevating any space. We tracked down the top tiled kitchens and bathrooms in our portfolio to give you a glimpse at how something as simple as tile can transform the design.

A welcomed spin on an all-white kitchen, this space introduces shades of gray to break up the monotony while maintaining a simple color scheme. On the island and countertops, a solid slab of marble adds a nod of sophistication while the tile sizes and color variations contribute a playful element.

The use of tile and muted colorways in the nearby butler’s pantry creates a significant impact in a small space. Larger, antiqued mirror tiles were chosen for the backsplash, and the solid marble countertop offer contrast in texture and pattern. Add a cocktail, and the space is complete.

Subway tiles are a go-to design choice for simple, sophisticated spaces. In this particular bathroom, a vertical line of smaller, grey and white glass tiles offers a dash of contemporary flair without interrupting the clean, minimalist design.

No stranger to the incorporation of color, Beth added touches of teal to this serene space to instantly modernize the design. Against a neutral backdrop, teal accents pack a colorful punch.

An approachable kitchen design showcases contemporary and traditional styles. Here, glossy subway tiles stand out. With a visible grout, they are a noticeable element that fit seamlessly into the overall design.

The application of marble tile makes this bathroom unique, and the differing patterns flow effortlessly. Within the black-and-white scheme, it’s the basketweave flooring that is the most striking.

March Newsletter – March Madness

March madness is more than basketball. Somehow, without fail, every March our to-do lists explode. It is as if we’ve been hibernating all winter and all of the sudden we are bursting with energy to get projects done around the house, make plans for the summer, and renew our spaces. At BHD, we are excited to see projects progress and we are incredibly eager for the weather to improve so we can enjoy all the landscaping projects we completed last fall. Nothing inspires us like trees budding, flowers blooming, and design projects coming to fruition!

BATHROOMS GALORE

A few months ago, we did a mini-series on Instagram featuring design secrets behind some our most beloved kitchen designs. Everyone loves when we pull back the curtains and share some of what goes into creating projects so we thought we would a followup series on bathroom design. Let’s take a look behind the scenes at some of our favorite creations!

Though all eyes might be on the great soaking tub, the object that really pulls this look together is the chandelier. We wanted to find an extraordinary fixture that could balance the weight of the giant tub yet keep the space light, airy, and open.

The glass chandelier in pale blue draws the eye up and actually makes the space appear bigger. The colors are reflected in custom tile inlays in the shower, vanity backsplash, and vanity knobs. The look is unified without feeling overly matchy-matchy.  And it was a surprised gift this husband staged with our help.

We love the glamour of this small powder room. By painting the walls dark and bringing in light through both a vanity light and a lit custom niche, we created drama that is sure to impress any visitor. In addition, the tile wall placed behind the toilet is totally unexpected and completes the space.

Surprise, surprise, another bathroom painted grey! This timeless master bath is glamorous and understated. We love the way the contrast created between the dark grey walls and the beautiful marble makes the design pop. The custom tile inlay is exquisite and ties in the grey. The dark tile floor in the shower futher unites the space and creates an interesting contrast with the floor.

Simplicity shines in this gorgeous, understated master bath shower. Oversize porcelain tile sets the stage for the pearlescent seaglass colored elongated tiles. The long, linear drain placed in near the back wall of the shower mimics the strong horizontal lines while above, a series of windows bath the space in natural light. What a beautiful, zen space- perfect to start and end everyday.

Featured Event: Nashville International Women’s Day

There are a plethora of good events on Wednesday, March 8th for Women’s Day but we love the event happening tomorrow night at Oz Arts. Nashville International Women’s Day, in partnership with OZ ARTS Nashville, will bring performing artists and activists together March 8th to celebrate women and diversity in our city. Their goal is to listen to many different voices of Nashville women and learn how we can work harder to support each other.

Other ways to support “International Women’s Day / aka “A Day Without a Woman” and show solidarity are to exclusively support small, women and minority owned businesses. Nashville has so many great businesses run by powerhouse women that inspire us day in and day out. Take a walk down 12S and be amazed by the sheer number of female owned small businesses. Don’t forget to stop by BHD and say hi!

Featured Hot Topic: Music & Design

Interior design is seen as a quiet art, even a silent art yet fashion is almost always linked to music. For anyone with a habit of streaming runway shows know, the fashion becomes inseparable from the tone set by the music and any music lover knows the power of music to change the vibe of their space. Even soundtracks in movies become inseparable from production design and set design.

This month, we’ve been looking for inspiration. A new soundtrack for the new year. A new fight song, if you will. Happily, we’ve stumbled upon house musician Ben Pearce’s What I might Do.Take a listen and see what you think. What is your go-to song these days?

The Beauty of Custom New Construction

Upon arriving at this home in a wooded neighborhood near Radnor Lake in Nashville, guests might be surprised by the interiors unless they knew our client. In that case, friends would likely recognize the aesthetic and personality from a mile away and be able to match up the interiors with the homeowners immediately. From the hand-painted Mexican tiles inspired by an old magazine clipping our clients saved, to the playroom tucked under the over-sized kitchen island, friends would be able to pinpoint  the client’s Hispanic heritage, love of color and love of family. Everything has a reason, a function, and most importantly, a story.

Front entry way complete with custom door and a melange of custom colors inspired by travels to Mexico.

One thing everyone comments on when they walk into the home is the strong, unabashed use of color. Even we have to admit they are gutsy and unique! Some might be surprised to see a brand new construction home infused with so much personality, intrigue, heart and soul, but that is the magic of a custom home, isn’t it? In a custom home, the clients, the design team, and the contractor come together to not only create a space that reflects the client’s personality, but also to take an objective look at every aspect of construction; Nothing is a given, everything is a decision. The result in this custom home is pure joy. Bright pink, deep blues, citrus greens – they are all at home!

Our client loves color which was used inventively throughout the home.

The open and bright entryway makes the perfect welcome area. Warm wood tones, vibrant colors, custom stairway, and gallery wall featuring a collection of photos from the clients travels makes a strong design statement and sets the tone for the rest of the home. The miniature doorway under the stairs was designed to give access to the crawl space under the stairs, but we imagine the grandchildren are fascinated by the little door and have declared the space as one of their own!

A spacious and open kitchen functions as the multitasking heart of the home

We loved designing the details of the kitchen and tailoring it specially to the homeowners cooking, storage and personal design aesthetic.  First, was to layout the floor plan to create a chef’s kitchen that was at once hard working but also easy on the eyes.  Next, we selected the finishes and fixtures to match the inspiration photos.  Lastly, we stretched our imaginations to use every bit of the island which includes a small play space for the grandchildren.  Not only does this space work as a great place to tuck away toys when they are not in use, it also is illuminated so the kids can play while everyone gathers around for family events.

Detail shot of tile sourced from the old magazine clipping and a closer look at the island

We love the organic quality the tiles lend to the kitchen. The bright blue is lively and upbeat but the unique characteristics of each tile feels very genuine and real. It’s interesting because those are the words we would use to describe the rest of the house as well.

Custom cherry built-ins with accent lighting in the living room

The eclectic mix of colors compliments the wall of beautiful built-ins perfectly. The color balances the brown and creates a nice layered look. We love the rich hues and mix of textiles and surfaces. The shelves are an assortment of family heirlooms, photographs, interesting books and treasures collected from around the world.  The furniture is bold and charismatic, beckoning you to come sit, relax and enjoy the natural light which warms the spaces.

This master suite could be in Nashville, LA, Barcelona, or anywhere else in the world. The modern mix of prints, color, texture, fabrics, textiles, surfaces is truly international. We love the floor to ceiling tiles and emphasis it adds to the bed.  You feel transported to another part of the world.

This gorgeous wallpaper actually started as a ceiling accent but it was so cheery, warm and unexpected, we had to extend it down the walls as well.  We love the pattern and the soft glow it lends to the space. Its a perfect compliment to the grey custom designed storage.

The guest suite designed for our client’s daughter is an intentional departure from the vibrancy of the rest of the home. Bathed in neutrals and serene natural elements, the guest suite is the perfect tailored to their daughter’s aesthetic. What a nice gesture to design for your most sought after guest!

Last but not least, here is the accompanying bathroom as part of the guest suite. The soft, serene environment is continued and we couldn’t be more pleased with the balance, tone, and texture of the space. All and all, this house manages to find the right balance between vibrant eclectic and modern, serene and contemporary. Designed to match the personality and lifestyle of its family, this custom home will welcome many, offer a backdrop for happy memories and engulf the owners in joyful celebration of life, heritage and family.  Hope you enjoyed the tour!
